Letter From The CEO: July 2014

Dear Members,

Summer is now fully on us, and that means our outdoor pool is exceptionally busy. The question I have to ask myself every day is how do we balance safety and fun. There is always a static tension between the two. If we go too far on the safety and try to wrap the kids in multiple layers of bubble wrap, then they do not have fun in the pool and their skills never increase. On the other hand, if the focus on safety is too loose, then the pool is not safe. After consulting with the Y of the USA aquatics specialists, other Ys around the country and our insurance carriers, we have changed the rules for our pools. Every member will receive a copy of these new rules during the next week. We need to get our guards trained and new signage—but the rules will be in place by July 4.

We have scheduled the bubble to be put up during the week of Sept 15. The weather will have to cooperate—no wind or rain for it to be a successful week.

Next week, we will start the annual maintenance at the Mapleton Y. Projects will include the refinishing of the wood floors as well as deep cleaning of the pool, spas, saunas and locker rooms. The parking lots will get restriped, and the grounds will get a clean-up.

This past weekend, we had our annual gala. It was a great success; look at the photos of the event on the lobby TVs and on our Facebook page. I am so pleased to let you know that we raised more than $80,000 to send children to summer camp this year.

Lastly, all of you should have seen the signs in our lobbies that let members know we are making sure every member has their photo connected with their membership. This is important, so we know who is in the buildings at all times.
